Tips for Managing Your Child’s Allergies

Tips for Managing Your Child’s Allergies

Allergies can make kids feel miserable and for us as parents, it can be hard to tell whether it’s allergies or just another cold. Unlike a cold, allergy symptoms often linger and tend to follow patterns (like seasonal changes or exposure to pets). As we head into spring in Augusta, let’s revisit how to help alleviate allergy symptoms.

Common allergy symptoms include:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy nose and/or eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

When left untreated, allergies can interfere with school, sleep, sports, and family time. The good news? There are effective ways to manage them. Here are seven practical tips to help your child feel better.

The right medication can make a big difference. Two of the most common treatments include:

Antihistamines: taken by mouth, antihistamines can help relieve:

  • Itchy, watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy skin and hives

Some antihistamines may cause drowsiness, so talk with your pediatrician about which option is best for your child’s age and daily routine.

The other option for allergy treatment is a nasal corticosteroid. These are highly effective for controlling chronic nasal allergy symptoms.

They are:

  • Safe for long-term use in children
  • Most effective when used daily

Consider Allergy Testing

Knowing what your child is allergic to is one of the most important steps in creating a treatment plan. Allergy testing can identify reactions to:

  • Indoor allergens: dust mites, pets, pests
  • Outdoor allergens: pollens
  • Molds: found both indoors and outdoors

Once you know the trigger, you can take targeted steps to reduce exposure.

Focus on Allergen Avoidance

Avoidance is one of the most powerful tools in managing allergies. When possible, avoid triggering allergic reactions by avoiding their causes. For example, if your child is allergic to pets:

  • Avoid adding new pets to the family
  • If a pet in the home is confirmed as the allergen, finding the pet a new home may be the only way to significantly reduce exposure

Specifically with spring allergies, limiting exposure to outdoor allergens can be a big help!

For children allergic to pollens or molds:

  • Use air conditioning when possible
  • Shower or bathe at the end of the day to remove pollen from skin and hair
  • Stay indoors when grass is being mowed (if allergic to grass pollen)
  • Avoid playing in tall grass during peak seasons

Remember: Pets that go outdoors can bring pollen and mold back inside on their fur.

Ask About Allergy Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots)

If allergen avoidance and medications aren’t enough, allergy immunotherapy may be an option.

Allergy shots are:

  • Prescribed only for children with confirmed allergies
  • Effective for respiratory allergies to pollens, dust mites, pet dander, and molds
  • Designed to reduce long-term symptoms and decrease the need for daily medication

This treatment gradually helps the immune system become less sensitive to allergens. Talk to us and we can see if we recommend allergy testing for your child.

Allergies are a common nuisance for many children and adults, especially in the springtime. However, they don’t have to control your child’s life. With proper diagnosis, targeted avoidance, and the right treatment plan, most children can find significant relief.
